Forthcoming Release: MetroConnect Carrier Ethernet Service Delivery
Metrodata is pleased to announce the forthcoming release of the MetroConnect family, offering the Carrier high density fibre Ethernet service delivery from core network to customer demarcation point. The MetroConnect: MC12000 system supports dual redundant PSUs and 'hot-swap' resilience for FCC9000 Network Interface modules. 10/10/1000 Copper-Fibre media conversion is presented via fully-flexible and resilient dual SFP connection.
MetroConnect may be deployed either as a complete cost-effective Ethernet Edge delivery solution, using the FCM9000 as a managed media conversion and Ethernet Demarcation Device, or using the MC12000 purely for high-density media conversion as part of a wider Ethernet NGN architecture. Specifically, a number of NGN Network Centre Ethernet Service Platforms offer a high port density of Copper connection for 10/100/100BaseT. These platforms typically offer a much lower density for fibre distribution and so present fibre Ethernet at much higher per-port cost. By providing high-density, cost effective conversion of Copper to Fibre, MetroConnect enables the use of higher-density Copper-port cards at the Ethernet Service Platform, whilst ensuring flexibility and resilience for service distribution over fibre via the use of dual SFP connection.
Key features include
- Up to 24 resilient 10/100/1000 Fibre links via dual SFP ports between MC12000 & FCM9000
- Comprehensive SNMP/Telnet Management
- Fibre resilience via IEEE802.3ad and RSTP
- IEEE 802.3ah 'link-OAM' optionally enabled
- Ethernet 'Jumbo' frame support

New E1 Mux with Resilient Fibre
With the growing trend to utilise modern fibre networks and the need to link legacy E1 circuits together, Metrodata has launched the new Emux that offers multiple E1 connectivity over a fibre link.
With 4, 8 and 16 E1 (RJ45) ports and 2 fibre ports (1+1), resilience is offered via a second fibre port and management is offered as both Local (via the console port) and Remote (via SNMP/Telnet session)
Applications
The new Emux can include simple point to point transportation of multiple E1 across a Multimode or Singlemode fibre link or, it can be used in conjunction with a MetroRack to further 'distribute' individual E1s from a central location.
The fibre
The fibre ports are presented as SFP modules that enable various types of fibre interfaces to be supported including Multimode, Singlemode, CWDM and DWDM

Management and VLAN Support for Ethernet Extender
Metrodata has launched a new version of the popular WAN-in-a-CAN (WC) Ethernet Extender family, bringing VLAN support and Management to this cost-effective WAN Switch range.
Each of the WC Ethernet Extender products offers a simple "plug and play" approach to extend a customer's Ethernet LAN to remote sites via Serial (X.21 or V.35), E1 (2Mbps G.703) leased line or E3/DS3 leased line connections.
The new WCM1000 builds on the existing 10/100 Ethernet over E1 Extender, offering remote management via Telnet or SNMP, as well as Native VLAN support.
The WCM1000 supports local Switching via a 4-port10/100Mbps Ethernet LAN switch module, thereby removing the need for external switches or hubs in smaller LAN installations. VLAN support is offered either in pass-through/trunking mode or Tag Switching mode, whereby traffic is switched between ports dependent upon VLAN ID.
A highly efficient HDLC encapsulation of packets ensures that maximum throughput is achieved on the WAN link. Internal packet buffering enables the WCM1000 to smooth out bursty traffic without packet loss.

New Interface Converters for HSSI to EIA530
On the back of strong demand for the BC1X00 HSSI to LVDS (EIA664) converter products, which have seen use in a variety of applications interfacing between routers, serial encryptors, and Radio or Satellite Communications equipment, Metrodata has now launched a converter range for HSSI to EIA530 applications, the BC2x00 family.
Two new products are offered, the BC2000 presents a HSSI DTE interface and EIA530 DCE interface, whilst the BC2100 presents an EIA530 DTE interface and HSSI DCE interface. Transparent operation is offered at up to 20Mbps throughput.
Typical BC2000 applications include connection between a EIA530 Router port and a HSSI Satellite Modem port, or vice-versa using the BC2100. Alternatively, both BC2000 and BC2100 products might be used together to effect connection between a Router, Crypto device and Satellite Modem, where for example the Crypto may have EIA530 ports and the Router and Satellite Modem each have HSSI ports.

Expanded range of 10/100/1000 Ethernet Media Converters
Metrodata is pleased to announce two new additions to its Media Converter family, targeting the 10/100/1000 Ethernet arena. Joining the popular FC-GigE product, used for conversion between 1000BaseLX and 1000BaseSX fibre interfaces, are the FC5000 and FC7X00 product families.
The FC5000 provides up to Gig Ethernet speed and Optical (SFP) to Electrical (RJ45) interface conversion between a single 10/100/1000BaseT copper port and either a 1000BaseSX (multi-mode) or 1000BaseLX (single-mode) fibre port, determined by SFP Transceiver. The FC7000, FC7100 and FC7200 products provide similar conversion between 10/100BaseT copper and 100BaseFX fibre interfaces, supporting multi-mode, single-mode short-haul and single-mode long-haul applications respectively.
In common with other Metrodata products, all of the Ethernet Media Converters are designed for absolute simplicity and maximum effectiveness. The entire family comprise robust metal boxed units with integral power supply, either 100-250 VAC or -48 VDC. Both FC5000 and FC7X00 ranges feature auto-negotiation, and auto MDI/MDI-X cross-over switching on all copper ports, for ease of installation and use.
To ensure reliable operation, both ranges support Link State Forwarding whereby a fault on the fibre will automatically force a ‘link down’ on the copper port to indicate to the attached device that there is a link problem.
The FC5000 is orderable with either 1000BaseSX or 1000BaseLX SFP (small form-factor pluggable) transceiver pre-installed for LC fibre connection, although customers may subsequently change between multi-mode or single-mode fibre interfaces by purchasing an alternative transceiver from Metrodata. The FC7X00 family offers fixed transceivers for multi-mode (up to 5km), single-mode short-haul (up to 30km) or single-mode long-haul (up to 70km) applications, using duplex SC presentation, although customers are invited to contact Metrodata for alternative interface options.
